You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out: Trusting God With Who You’re Becoming
There’s a lot of pressure to figure yourself out.Who are you? What are you good at? What are you going to do with your life? What are you supposed to look like? Who are your people? What is your purpose? And somehow, it can feel like you’re supposed to have answers to all of those questions right now.If you’re a Christian teen girl or young woman trying to follow Jesus, you may even add a few more questions to the list:What is God’s plan for me? Am I doing enough? How do I know what He’s calling me to do? What if I make the wrong choice? Here’s some encouragement you might need today:You do not have to have your whole life figured out to faithfully follow God today.God already knows where He’s leading you. Your job isn’t to see the entire road ahead. Your job is to stay close to the One who does.
You Are Still Becoming
One of the hardest things about being a teen girl or young woman is that you’re making decisions about your future while you’re still discovering who you are.And that’s okay. You’re learning. You’re growing. You’re discovering your gifts, your interests, your strengths, and even some of your weaknesses. But there’s something incredibly freeing about understanding your identity in Christ:You may still be discovering who you’re becoming, but you don’t have to wonder whose you are. Before you figure out your career, your college plans, your relationships, your dreams, or your future, God wants you to know who you are as His daughter. That’s why discovering your identity in Christ is so important. The world will constantly offer you identities based on appearance, popularity, achievement, relationships, success, likes, followers, or other people’s opinions. Those things change. God’s truth doesn’t.When you begin building your identity on what God says about you, you have something solid to stand on while everything else is still being figured out.
You Don't Need More Confidence in Yourself
We hear a lot about self-confidence.Believe in yourself. Trust yourself. You’ve got this. But what happens on the days when you don’t feel like you’ve got this? What happens when you’re scared? What happens when you fail? What happens when you feel completely unqualified for what’s in front of you? This is one of my favorite truths from the ARISE Bible Study for young women and teen girls: God never intended for you to be enough all by yourself. He created you to rely on Him.In 2 Corinthians 12:9, God says:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is being perfected in weakness.”You don't have to manufacture enough confidence, strength, wisdom, or ability to handle everything life throws at you.You have enough in Christ.
His grace is enough.
His strength is enough.
His power is enough.
And because of that, Christian confidence can look very different from the confidence the world tells you to chase. It isn't walking into every situation thinking, I know I can do this.Sometimes it's walking in thinking:“I don't know if I can do this—but I know God can.”
Stay Close Instead of Trying to See Ahead
So what do you do when you don't know what comes next?Jesus gives us a beautiful answer in John 15:5:“I am the Vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him bears much fruit…”In the ARISE Bible Study, one of the practical responses we explore is simply: I will abide. To abide means to remain. Stay. Dwell. Continue. Notice that Jesus doesn't tell the branch to figure out how to produce fruit. He tells it to remain connected to the Vine. That truth can take so much pressure off your shoulders.Maybe you don't need to know exactly what God will be doing in your life five years from now. Maybe today you simply need to stay connected to Him.
Read His Word.
Talk to Him.
Listen.
Obey what you already know He's asking you to do.
Keep seeking Him.
Keep showing up.
Stay close to Jesus and let Him lead you one step at a time.
Your Purpose Isn't Waiting Somewhere in the Future
Sometimes we talk about finding our God-given purpose as though it's a hidden treasure we have to discover before we can finally begin living the life God has for us.But your purpose isn't only about what you'll do someday.
You can live with purpose today.
You can love someone today.
You can encourage a friend today.
You can pray for someone today.
You can represent Jesus in the way you treat people today.
You can use the gifts you already have today.
You can tell someone what God has done in your life today.
Those things matter. You don't have to wait until you're older, more experienced, more confident, or more accomplished before God can use your life.Your story is already being written.
Stop Comparing Your Chapter to Hers
And while God is writing your story, be careful not to spend so much time looking at someone else's that you miss what He's doing in yours.Comparison can make you believe you're behind.Someone else seems more confident. She's already figured out what she wants to do. Her friendships look better. She's more talented. She seems further along spiritually. Her life looks like it's all coming together while yours feels like a giant question mark. But God isn't asking you to live her story. He's asking you to walk with Him through yours.
You don't need her gifts to fulfill your calling.
You don't need her personality.
You don't need her opportunities.
And you certainly don't need her timeline.
You need Jesus.
You Can Trust God With the Girl You're Becoming
Maybe that's the reminder you need today.
You don't have to know exactly who you'll be five years from now.
You don't have to know exactly where you'll go.
You don't have to know exactly how God will use your gifts.
And you don't have to have every detail of your calling figured out.
Know God. Know who you are in Christ. Stay close to Him. And trust Him with the rest.God is not confused about your future. He's not waiting for you to become more impressive before He can use you.And He isn't asking you to navigate your life without Him.
So keep growing.
Keep seeking.
Keep trusting.
Keep becoming.
And when you don't feel like you're enough for whatever is ahead, remember:You were never supposed to do it without Him.His grace is enough. 🤍
